Earache or pain in the ear is known as otalgia in medical terms. It is a common complaint related to ear particularly in children. A mild earache is not a big problem, as the reason behind a mild earache is a minor infection, which is usually self – subsiding even without treatment. But a severe earache might be a matter of great concern and urgency.

Earache can be of various types like sharp, dull or burning pain. This pain can be “continuous” which is the one that remains there throughout the day or it may be “intermittent” the one which is off and on in nature. Let’s have a look at some effective earache remedies.

Internal Application to Treat the Cause From Within

Remedy 1: Warm and hot compress

Ingredients:

  1. Hot water bottle
  2. small cloth

Procedure:

  1. Take a hot water bottle and place it on your ear.
  2. Let it rest there for 20 minutes and then discard the drops.
  3. Repeat this process 2 – 3 times a day.
Remedy 2: Olive Oil

Ingredients:

  1. Olive oil – 4 to 5 drops

Procedure:

  1. Take few drops of olive oil and warm it.
  2. Pour 4 – 5 drops of warm olive oil in the aching ear by using a dropper or cotton ball.
  3. Repeat this process 3 – 4 times a day.
Remedy 3: Onion

Ingredients:

  1. Onion – 1/2 onion

Procedure:

  1. Take 1/2 onion and grate it into thin slices.
  2. Crush these slices and obtain juice out of them.
  3. Pour 2 – 3 drops of onion juice in the aching ear.
  4. Repeat this process 3 – 4 times a day.
Remedy 4: Neem Oil

Ingredients:

  1. Neem oil – 4 to 5 drops

Procedure:

  1. Pour 4 – 5 drops of neem oil in the aching ear by using a dropper or cotton ball.
  2. Leave it there for few minutes and then discard it.
  3. Repeat it twice a day.

Remedy 5: Garlic

Ingredients:

  1. Garlic – 4 to 5 cloves
  2. Sesame oil – 2 tablespoon

Procedure:

  1. Take 4 to 5 cloves of garlic and slice them into small pieces.
  2. Crush these small pieces of Garlic.
  3. Now heat these crushed garlic pieces in 2 tablespoons of Sesame oil for a couple of minutes.
  4. Let the mixture cool down and strain it.
  5. Pour 3 – 4 drops of this oil in the aching ear.
  6. Repeat this process 2 times a day.
Remedy 6: Basil Leaves

Ingredients:

  1. Basil leaves – 4 to 5 leaves

Procedure:

  1. Crush 4 – 5 basil leaves to extract juice out of them.
  2. Pour 3 – 4 drops of the juice in the aching ear.
  3. Repeat it twice a day.
Remedy 7: Sesame Oil

Ingredients:

  1. Sesame oil – 1 teaspoon
  2. Castor plant leaves – 5 to 6 leaves

Procedure:

  1. Take 5 – 6 castor plant leaves and heat them in 1 teaspoon Sesame oil.
  2. Let the mixture cool down and strain it.
  3. Pour 2 – 3 drops of it in the aching ear by using a dropper or cotton ball.
  4. Repeat it 2 times a day.
Remedy 8: Tea Tree Oil

Ingredients:

  1. Tea tree oil – 4 to 5 drops

Procedure:

  1. Pour 4 – 5 drops of Tea tree oil in the aching ear by using a dropper or cotton ball.
  2. Leave it there for few minutes and then discard it.
  3. Repeat it twice a day.
Remedy 9: Bishop’s Weed Oil

Ingredients:

  1. Bishop’s Weed Oil – 1 teaspoon
  2. Sesame oil – 3 teaspoons

Procedure:

  1. Mix 1 teaspoon of bishop’s weed oil and 3 teaspoons of Sesame oil.
  2. Heat this mixture for few minutes.
  3. Pour 4 – 5 drops of this mixture in the aching ear.
  4. Repeat it 3 – 4 times a day.
Remedy 10: Radish

Ingredients:

  1. Radish – 1/2 Radish
  2. Mustard oil – 1 tablespoon

Procedure:

  1. Take 1/2 radish and cut it into thin slices.
  2. Heat radish slices in 1 tablespoon of mustard oil.
  3. Let the mixture cool down and strain it.
  4. Pour 4 – 5 drops of this mixture in the aching ear.
  5. Repeat it thrice a day.
Remedy 11: Apple Cider Vinegar

Ingredients:

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar – 1 tablespoon
  2. Rubbing alcohol – 1 tablespoon

Procedure:

  1. Mix 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and 1 tablespoon of rubbing alcohol.
  2. Pour 2 – 3 drops of this mixture in the affected Ear and leave for few minutes.
  3. Repeat it at least 2 – 3 times a day.
Remedy 12: Hydrogen Peroxide

Ingredients:

  1. Hydrogen Peroxide – 2 to 3 drops

Procedure:

  1. Pour 2 – 3 drops of hydrogen peroxide in the aching ear.
  2. Let it be there for few minutes and then drain it out.
  3. Repeat it once a day.
Remedy 13: Mango Leaves

Ingredients:

  1. Mango leaves – 4 to 5

Procedure:

  1. Take 4 – 5 Mango leaves and heat them for few minutes.
  2. After that crush the leaves to extract juice out of them.
  3. Pour 4 – 5 drops of Mango leaves juice in the aching ear and let it work for a night.
  4. Repeat it 2 times a day.
Remedy 14: White Vinegar and Rubbing Alcohol

Ingredients:

  1. White Vinegar – 1 tablespoon
  2. Rubbing alcohol – 1 tablespoon

Procedure:

  1. Mix 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and 1 tablespoon of rubbing alcohol.
  2. Pour 2 – 3 drops of this mixture in the affected Ear and leave for few minutes.
  3. Repeat this process twice a day.

Remedy 15: Essential Oil Earache Rub

Ingredients:

  1. Olive oil – 1/4 cup
  2. Tea tree oil – 10 to 12 drops
  3. Lavender essential oil – 10 to 12 drops

Procedure:

  1. Take a small bowl and mix 1/4 cup of olive oil, 10 – 12 drops of tea tree oil and 10 – 12 drops of lavender essential oil in it.
  2. Mix all these ingredients and gently apply this mixture around the aching ear.
  3. Repeat this 3 – 4 times a day.
Remedy 16: Ginger

Ingredients:

  1. Ginger – 1 fresh ginger root
  2. Sesame oil – 1/4 cup

Procedure:

  1. Take a fresh ginger root and slice it into small pieces.
  2. Now take 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger root pieces and then heat them in ¼ cup of sesame oil.
  3. Apply this warm solution externally around the aching ear.
  4. Repeat it as frequently as you can.
Remedy 17: Salt

Ingredients:

  1. Table salt – 4 to 5 tablespoon

Procedure:

  1. Take a pan and add 4 – 5 tablespoons of table salt in it.
  2. Heat the salt until it becomes a bit brown in color.
  3. Now wrap the salt in a clean cloth and press it over the aching ear for 4 – 5 minutes.
  4. Repeat this process every day to get rid of the pain.     
Remedy 18: Licorice

Ingredients:

  1. Licorice – 1 Licorice root
  2. Clarified Butter – 2 tablespoons

Procedure:

  1. Take a small Licorice root and heat it in 2 tablespoons of clarified butter.
  2. Mix these ingredients to obtain a paste out of them.
  3. Now apply the paste to the outer part of the aching ear.
  4. Repeat this process 3 – 4 times a day.
Remedy 19:  Peppermint oil

Ingredients:

  1. Peppermint oil – 4 to 5 drops
  2. Olive oil – 1 to 2 drops

Procedure:

  1. Mix 4 – 5 drops of peppermint oil and 1 – 2 drops of olive oil.
  2. Take a cotton swab and dip it in the mixture.
  3. Now apply this mixture of oil externally around the opening of the infected ear.
  4. Repeat this thrice a day.
Remedy 20: Eucalyptus Oil

Ingredients:

  1. Eucalyptus oil – 10 to 12 drops
  2. Water – a bowl
  3. Vicks – 1 teaspoon

Procedure:

  1. Take a bowl full of boiling water.
  2. Add 10 – 12 drops of eucalyptus oil in the water.
  3. After that add 1 teaspoon of Vicks in the water.
  4. Now, inhale the steam of this boiling water.
  5. Repeat this process twice a day until you get complete relief from the earache.

Causes Of Earache

Earache can occur due to many reasons; some of them are enlisted below:

  1. Boils – Boils or furuncle are small red – colored pus-filled bumps that are present around a hair follicle in the ear canal. Boils are tender, warm, and very painful.
  2. Common cold and Allergies – Earache is usually associated with common cold and Allergies.
  3. Otitis externa – It is the infection of the external ear or the ear canal.
  4. Otitis media – It is the infection of the middle part of the ear.
  5. Change in pressure – This is usually seen in swimmers and persons who are flying on a plane at a high altitude.
  6. Foreign object – Any foreign object in the ear like small insects, pins, nails etc. can lead to pain.
  7. Infection in the throat – Due to the connection between Ear and throat, the pain from throat due to conditions like tonsillitis, sore throat, pharyngitis, laryngitis can even make your ear to ache.
  8. Sinus infection – Infections in sinus can lead to pain in the ear.

  1. Always try to blow your nose gently with one nostril closed. Blowing the nose too hard can cause an earache by carrying germs into the ear.
  2. It is always advised not to clean Ear wax regularly. Ear wax plays important role in protection and lubrication of the ear. Therefore regular cleaning of Ear wax will make the ear canal more prone to bacterial infection.
  3. Mucus production increases in conditions like cold and flu. This increases the chances of accumulation of mucus in the middle ear which may lead to Ear pain. Therefore, you should avoid catching a cold or flu too frequently by following precautions like washing hands frequently, not sharing utensils, covering the mouth when sneezing, and getting a seasonal flu vaccination.
  4. Avoid the use of Earbuds to clean the ear wax. Earbuds are not a safe option to clean the ear wax as they can cause damage to the eardrum. This is because while using Earbuds you are not aware of the depth of the ear canal.
  5. The risk of developing middle ear infections in babies can be reduced by providing a smoke – free environment and breastfeeding the baby in an upright position.

Fact: NO, it is not safe to use Ear drops if you have a hole in your eardrum. It is always suggested by the doctors to keep your ear dry if you have a hole in your eardrum. This is because due to the perforation of the eardrum, Ear drops will directly enter into the middle ear through the hole and will leave the place moist. The moist and humid environment is favorable for the bacteria to grow. A moist environment will complicate the situation even more.
