How to Get Rid Of Hiccups Quickly?

Hiccups are medically known as synchronous diaphragmatic flutter (SDF) or singultus. When a person is experiencing hiccups, it is because of the uncontrollable and rapid contraction of a muscle known as the diaphragm.

The diaphragm is present right above the stomach. The characteristic sound produced during hiccups is because of breathing very quickly. Due to rapid breathing, the vocal cords close suddenly and tend to produce sounds.

Hiccups may be caused by eating very spicy food, having carbonated drinks or even eating too quickly. Although hiccups can be a little uncomfortable, especially if they are being accompanied by a sound, they usually do not indicate anything serious.

It is easy to get rid of them using some simple and quick home remedies.

Holding Your Breath

If you do not have anything at hand, then doing this remedy can be very helpful. Holding the breath for some time actually increases the concentration of carbon dioxide in the body. This distracts the mind and the breathing is slowly returned to the normal pace.

How to:

  1. Take a deep breath.
  2. Hold it in for at least 30 to 40 seconds.
  3. Now exhale slowly and gently.
  4. Do the above-mentioned steps for 5-6 times and you will find that the hiccups are gone.

Caution: this remedy is not recommended for children or any individual with breathing difficulties. It must also not be repeated more than 10 times.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has a very sour taste. Consuming apple cider vinegar when having hiccups helps to distract the mind and stop the hiccups within a few seconds.

You will need:

  • 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
  • 250 ml of water

How to:

  1. Mix the apple cider vinegar with the water.
  2. Consume this solution immediately in one breath.
  3. This will make the hiccups stop.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice helps to get rid of hiccups within a few seconds. Its sour and sharp taste will help to give a mild but sudden change of stimuli in order to return to the normal pace of breathing and thus making the hiccups stop.

You will need:

  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
  • ½ cup of water

How to:

  1. Mix the lemon juice with the water.
  2. Drink this solution in one gulp.
  3. This will make the hiccups stop immediately.

Another way to use lemon is to simply bite into a thin slice of it. However, the taste of undiluted lemon juice may be too sharp.

Ginger Slices

Ginger has a strong taste and its juice will immediately help to calm down the irritated nerves. Thus ginger can help to get rid of hiccups. Ginger will also help to relax the muscles and prevent the hiccups from happening again.

You will need:

  • A teaspoon of ginger paste

How to:

  1. Simply place the ginger paste into your mouth.
  2. Do not swallow it immediately.
  3. Gulp it down with a sip of water after 20-30 seconds.

Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is quite an effective way of dealing with hiccups. The reason why peanut butter will help is that it has a thick consistency. While eating it slowly, the breathing pattern is interrupted and then returned to the normal pattern.

You will need:

  • 1 teaspoon of peanut butter
  • 1 glass of water

How to:

  1. Simply place a teaspoon of peanut butter in your mouth.
  2. Do not swallow it immediately.
  3. Chew on it for a few seconds and swallow it slowly.
  4. After eating it, sip on a little bit of water.
